TL;DR

When the aluminum lip of your bottom track gets chewed up by old rollers, no new roller will glide smoothly on it. We install a stainless steel track cap over the damaged track in about an hour, giving you a brand-new running surface without tearing the door out.

What is track repair?

Sliding glass door track repair is the restoration of the bottom aluminum channel a sliding glass door rides on - most commonly by installing a stainless steel track cap over a worn or grooved original track so new rollers can glide smoothly without further damage.

The bottom track of a sliding glass door is the long aluminum channel built into the door frame's lower sill. The door's rollers ride along this channel's raised lip. Over time, hardened steel roller wheels - especially after their bearings have worn out and the wheels start digging in - cut a U-shaped groove into the soft aluminum. Once that groove forms, every new set of rollers wears out faster, and the door catches or jumps as it slides over the damaged section.

Replacing the entire door frame to fix a worn track is a major project that involves removing the threshold, opening up the wall, and re-flashing for waterproofing. The repair-only alternative is a stainless steel track cap: a precision-formed strip of 304-grade stainless that snaps over the existing aluminum lip, restoring a perfect running surface in under two hours. It doesn't require pulling the threshold, doesn't disturb the wall flashing, and lasts the rest of the door's life because stainless doesn't corrode the way the original aluminum does.

Symptoms we'll fix

  • Visible groove, gouge, or sharp lip on the bottom track
  • Door slides smoothly in spots and catches in others
  • Rust pitting or aluminum oxidation along the track
  • Door has fallen off the track repeatedly
  • Replacing rollers didn't solve the problem (the track is the issue)
  • Black aluminum dust collecting in the channel
  • Track lip is bent inward from an impact

How the repair works

  1. 1

    Inspect track condition

We measure track depth, check for bends, and verify drainage weep holes aren't clogged with sand and salt residue.

  2. 2

    Lift door panel

We safely lift out the panel so the track is fully accessible.

  3. 3

    Clean and prep

We strip out 20 years of compacted dirt, sand, and corroded aluminum from the channel.

  4. 4

    Install stainless cap

A 304-grade stainless steel cap is laid over the existing aluminum track, giving you a smooth running surface that won't corrode in salt air.

  5. 5

    Reset, adjust, test

Door goes back in, rollers are adjusted, and we test for smooth operation across the full travel.

What drives the scope

Every track repair quote is flat-rate and written down on site before any work begins — typically a small fraction (around 10–15%) of what replacing the whole door would cost. Here is what shapes the scope of the job.

Standard 6-foot track re-cap
Single moving panel, no frame damage.
8-10 foot track re-cap
Longer track requires longer stainless profile.
Multi-panel pocket door track
More travel = more linear feet of capping needed.
Add roller replacement (recommended)
Almost always worth doing at the same time so new rollers start on a fresh surface.
Sand and salt removal (heavily neglected track)
When the channel hasn't been cleared in 10+ years.

I replaced the rollers and the door still catchesTrack damage - new rollers can't ride smoothly on a chewed-up aluminum lipRun your finger along the bottom track with the door open. If you feel a groove, the track needs re-capping.
Track is rusted and pittedOriginal aluminum + 10+ years of salt air = oxidation pittingIf the pitting is visible from above, the rollers are running on it - it's time to cap.
Sand grinds every time I slide the doorWeep holes are clogged and sand has compacted in the channelCheck the small drainage slots on the outside of the track. If they're full, the channel needs to be cleared.
Track is visibly bent inwardImpact damage - usually furniture or a heavy patio chairIf you can see a kink, do not force the door over it. We can sometimes hammer it back; sometimes the threshold has to come out.
